The History of Swan Lake

It is a ballet which was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875-76.The story is based on a Russian folk tale known as ,The Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights, which was published in 1828 by Alexander Pushkin. In initial it was not famous, but despite its failure, it is now one of the most popular ballet. It was initially in two acts and was fashioned from Russian folk tales.

It was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet on 20 February 1877 in Moscow theatre. It is presented in different versions. Tchaikovsky’s score and Reisinger’s original choreography are now lost however, the 1895 Petipa/Ivanov production has survived which is still performed by many ballets companies. The ballet received its American premiere in 1940.It was staged by the San Francisco Opera Ballet.
